Matangi Bali Initiative

Youth, women and Balinese community-led clean energy and climate entrepreneurship

About

“Matangi” meaning “to awaken” captures the spirit of revival and the symbiotic relationship between Balinese communities and nature. The project was set up to address the urgent need for inclusive, community-based climate solutions in Bali. Grounded in findings from our 2023-24 baseline study, we identified significant barriers faced by women entrepreneurs particularly around access to business skills, support networks, and funding. Originally launched as the ‘Bali Women Climate Entrepreneurs’ initiative, Matangi has since evolved to also scout and support youth and broader community innovators who are committed to advancing climate solutions in Bali.

Designed to support community-driven youth and women entrepreneurs in creating community-based climate solutions, the initiative provides training, capacity building, mentorship, and ecosystem support. The goal is to empower them as leaders in climate innovation and drivers of sustainable change within their communities in Bali. This initiative is led by New Energy Nexus Indonesia as part of the Bali Net Zero Emission Coalition, in collaboration with the CAST Foundation, IESR, and WRI Indonesia. The coalition is supported by ClimateWorks Foundation and ViriyaENB.
